PODCAST: Episode #62: The Energy Evolution: Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero

Climate change is a global challenge. Emissions that are produced in one place will end up in another place. However, climate action is also global. Solutions that are derived in one place and one industry won’t just help drive emissions down in that jurisdiction, but across the globe.

Climate action is also collaborative. To meet Canada’s climate goals and to reach net-zero by 2050, we need a suite of pathways, solutions, and actors. That means we need investors, business leaders, policymakers, communicators to each play their part in reducing emissions and working towards net zero.

One such actor in creating solutions to tackle climate change is the Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero alliance. Six of Canada’s oil sands companies, comprising 95% of Canada’s oil sands production, have come together to propose a phased approach to becoming net-zero by 2050.

Three leaders from the Alliance join this episode of The Energy Evolution to discuss the net-zero opportunity embedded within not only the oil sands themselves but also the opportunity to develop world-leading emissions-reducing technology, exportable knowledge and innovations, and a broader narrative about the energy evolution towards a low-carbon future.

Our guests are

  • Rhona del Frari, Chief Sustainability Officer & Senior Vice-President, Stakeholder Engagement, Cenovus Energy
  • Pam McIntyre, Senior Vice-President, Safety, Risk Management and Innovation, Canadian Natural Resources
  • Martha Hall Findlay, Chief Sustainability Officer, Suncor

The members of the Oil Sands Pathway to Net Zero alliance include Cenovus, Suncor, Imperial Oil, Canadian Natural Resources, MEG Energy, and ConocoPhilips.

In this episode:

  • What the Oil Sands Pathways initiative is
  • The importance of this initative
  • Pathways and phases of the initiative
  • Significance of the oil sands involvement in emission reductions
  • What a net zero future for the oil sands looks like
  • Individual corporate sustainability actions
  • Advice to other businesses developing net zero plans
